Sorry folks but I just can’t leave Amazfit’s name out of my mouth. In my defense, their award-winning wearables make it really hard to ignore them. With their Amazfit Verge smartwatch winning multiple awards in 2019 and their recently released GTR and GTS smartwatches, they’ve quickly made a name for themselves. For you hardcore and disenfranchised Pebble and Fitbit fans, Amazfit is the brand you should switch to.
This year at CES 2020, along with their new smartwatches, treadmill, and full fitness studio, they unveiled 2 models of true wireless earbuds. They are the Amazfit ZenBuds and PowerBuds. While the sleep-assisting ZenBuds are a new and pretty cool concept, the PowerBuds caught our eye over ALL of their other products.
They check all of the essential boxes for sound quality, battery life, and more, but one feature helps elevate them to the top of our list. That feature is the detachable ear hooks that are conveniently stored inside the lid of the charging case. It’s such a simple innovation but it makes such a huge difference in fit and security when they’re used for workouts. On top of that, having the option to take them off and have a designed place to put them when casually listening, is the icing on the cake. It’s funny that it took a small company only one try to master true wireless earbuds. Meanwhile, you still have big names pushing out inferior true wireless earbuds at a higher price.
Another notable feature that’s often overlooked, but not by Amazfit, is the ability to customize the on-ear controls. This allows you to make workouts run smoother by assigning the most common controls you use. It also comes in handy when you’re a heavy sweater like me. Just use the simple tap commands on the PowerBuds instead of dealing with wet fingers on a wet phone screen.
Here are all of the key features that make the Amazfit True Wireless PowerBuds one of the best in the biz:
- Built-in PPG heart rate sensors
- Bluetooth 5.0
- 8-hour battery life; 24 hours total with charging case
- IP55 water & dust resistance
- Dual-microphone setup for one-ear-calling with either earbud
- Built-in Siri and Google Assistant
- Customizable on-ear controls
- Detachable ear hooks
- USB-C charge port for super-fast charging; 15 min gets you 3 hours of listening time
- HD sound
- Thru Mode ambient sound for safer road running and walking
- 3 premium color options: Red/Black, Pink/White, and Green/Grey
If you’re familiar with traditional wireless headphone specs or you’re just a nerd like me, the USB-C charge port should jump off of the page at you. Most flagship Android phones use this style of port because it’s the best for data transfer and, more importantly, charging speed. Over the last few years, there’s been confusion and debates as to why most companies aren’t going to USB-C as the standard.
For instance, Apple uses USB-C ports on their laptops, but still uses the much slower Lightning port on everything else. The Samsung Galaxy Buds+ are one of the only other true wireless earbuds the has a USB-C port. With Amazfit helping to lead the way in this and other categories, you best believe that more of these big-name companies are feeling the heat.
